recently bought a 93 ford festiva with 160,000 mi. need to change the engine oil, i noticed a grease monkey sticker on the windshield, i called them and they said they use a blended synthetic oil. what do any of you guys recommend.

IMO, with 160K miles, I would not recommend a full synthetic. I would stick with a standard oil in a name brand like Valvoline, Castrol GTX, Q-State, etc. A synthetic blend would be OK as well, but not necessary. Motorcraft 5W-30 Synthetic Blend is a quality oil, available almost everywhere (like Wal-Mart) and usually less expensive. 10W-30 will also work.

Castrol 15w-40, or one of the Castrol high-mileage oils.

I buy whatever's on sale and mix them up, putting 1 litre (quart) of the better quality in with 2 of the cheap stuff. Today I put in 2 of 5w30 regular and one of high mileage because it was on sale last time I bought.

I would disagree. It depends on what the motor has ran before and what the service records indicate. A well taken care of engine that has always used a synthetic should continue to use it. My current daily festy has over 210k on the odo and hasnt lost a drop of mobile 1 since i bought it at 173k. Service records indicated it had been running full synthetic since around 30k miles so i wasnt about to go breaking tradition on such a well maintained vehicle!

If it doesnt leak, feel free to stick a nice high quality oil in it. It IS more expensive but really in the long run the only festy ive ever owned that ran and truly acted like it was brand new at over 200k with ZERO maintenance other than regular service was the one that had a high quality full synthetic oil in it from the beginning.

Ever since i bought that car i now run full synthetics in everything i own that doesnt have an oil leak!
