  • Hard to shift

Hello, i have a 92 ford festiva with the five speed manual transaxle, it has been getting really tuff to shift, meaning i have to use a lot more effort than normal, i was wondering if anyone else has had this problem, and if so what i have to do to fix it. any help is appreciated

2 to 1 says that if you drain the transmission you have gear oil in there and the cold weather is making it thicker. I would flush it and put the proper ATF it calls for in there.

        What Nerd Racing said!

Does it get easier to shift if you do a lot of miles or a lot of stop and go?

Not to thread jack but I would like to know the answer to this question as well because my 93 is getting hard to shift too but I know that I have the correct fluid in mine it only does it in 1st and reverse I think that mine is the throw out bearing although it has a new clutch pressure plate and throw out bearing it will go into 1st easily when I am down shifting and the rpms are just right but it is hard to get into reverse all the time any help would be great maybe we can kill 2 birds with 1 stone

Mine is pretty consistantly stiff, I don't notice any more but I went to drive my dads truck yesterday, then commented on how easy it was to shift.

mine shifts great till it gets to the -20* range we get here in the midwest for a while during winter, at which point till she's been ran for a couple blocks its damn near impossible to shift. once its warmed up though everything is golden!

Imo, try to find a quality full synthetic to put into it. Ive heard some great feedback on similar stories about people who drained and put the proper Royal Purple or Amsoil in their trans and it made cold weather shifting MUCH easier.
