I'm not sure if that's the right term for it...but the tube that usually goes from the exhaust manifold to the breather snorkel that pulls hot air on start up to help the car warm up....mine doesn't have one. I'm assuming at one time there was some sort of heat shield on the manifold that the tube connected to? Can someone get me some pics of this setup? I'm gonna make something up on my own even if it's just a piece of dryer vent tube held on with a coat hanger...i've sorted out my choke issue so now cold starts aren't hard at all, but it takes forGDever to warm up and i think this would really help. Also any info on the vacuum hose that operates the little choke plate inside the breather snorkel would be great...where do i hook it up, what operates it etc.

The engine originally came with a tin heat shield that spanned the top of the exhaust manifold and extended down to the exhaust pipe flange and covered the front side of the header pipes completely. Below is a picture I took for another purpose that shows the top of the heat shield. Ignore the green arrows. The red arrow is pointing to where there was a round (approx 1-1/2") tin pipe attached to the exhaust shield. In the picture I have smashed it closed because I didn't use it for summertime racing only. There was a piece of hose sort of like the "clothes dryer" hose you referred to that was attached to the air cleaner and the tin pipe that I smashed shut. The blue arrows point to the mounting bolts for the heat shield. You should be able to see the holes in the exhaust manifold where they were attached. There were also more attaching points on the front side of the exhaust manifold, too. If you post a WTB for the tin heat shield, I think someone on here would have one to sell. The shield is rather "form fitting" and would be hard to fabricate. As far as where the vacuum hose gets connected, I don't remember because as you can see from the picture I have stripped the engine compartment. You gonna race that thing?

Well since i can't figure out how to get that trap door in the breather to work properly, and since i don't have the right shield...ghetto ingenuity occurred and here's what i came up with:
I smashed the end of the hose down onto the manifold to contour it to it and made sure to leave enough gap so it didn't choke the engine out. It works but i think if i had some kind of shield covering the whole manifold it would draw in more warm air and warm the car up faster. I haven't noticed any issues with it running this way constantly...no pinging or anything like that.

The heat tube is supposed to come from the bottom. The idea is that the warm enters after flowing around the exhaust pipes when the engine first starts up and then colder air enters after warm up when the thermostatic baffle closes.
I recommend discarding the feedback carb and converting to an Escort or Weber carb. You will not have any trouble starting.
You will have poor gas mileage with the way you have connected the heat riser flex tubing.Last edited by bravekozak; 01-29-2013, 02:13 PM.
