  • Bypassing fuel pump inertia switch

    ok, so i picked up an Escort Gt a few weeks ago- and the only thing holding it up from starting is a bad fuel pump inertia switch. it won't reset, the button is stuck down.
    There are 3 wires to this switch- BLUE, BLACK, and GREEN/RED
    (Festiva's is BLACK, RED, GREEN/WHITE according to wiring diagram)

    If i were to bypass this switch, which wires should i twist together to get the fuel pump to work?

    Are you sure you are talking about the inertia switch?
    I only have two wires. GR/W and GR/Y

    The GR/Y wire goes from the fuel pump relay under the dash to the inertia switch on the inner L/H fenderwell.
    The inertia switch is normally closed and allows current to continue to flow through it to the fuel pump motor via the GR/W wire.

    By jumping the the GR/W and GR/Y wires, you will bypass the inertia switch.
    The gas will continue to pump in the event of a collision and the engine continues to run. As long as the fuel pump switch inside the vane air flow meter continues to detect air flow, the fuel pump relay will continue to deliver power to the pump.

    I would recommend installing a replacement inertia switch.

      Last I checked the button should be "stuck" down/pushed, it will pop up if in an accident or something triggers it.

      Basically it supplies a ground until tripped.
      If I am looking at the same diagram as you, you should be able to jump the blue and black together to make the pump run if the switch is bad.
      This is refering to the escort diagram.

      In the festy the inertia switch supplies a ground for the fuel pump as well.
      The GR/Y wire actually goes from the relay to the pump, the GR/W goes from the pump to the switch for a ground source.
      Went out and looked, my 91 has the RED, BLK and GR/W wires on the switch.
      Black = ground
      Red = Passive restraint system
      Green with white = to the fuel pump.

      Has yours been modified brave? or maybe a different year?

        ejp2fast, might want to see if you can't find an Escort wiring diagram.
        Might be one online somewhere or checkout a McParts place that has Hyanes manuals and just "look over the manual", to see if it has what your looking for.

        Wonder if the BLK wire is ground.
        I would think the festiva' Switch is grounded to the body due to how it is mounded, no wire needed.
        Don't Know, just guessing.

          89

          I installed an 89 inertia switch and connector.
          The 1990 shop manual also shows two wires on page 24-35-2.
          I am assuming full 12V power flows through this switch until it pops open in the event of hard impact.

            i have a haynes manual in the mail now......
            upon further research, if i just twist together the BLK, GRN/RED
            this will complete the circuit.

            and i dont want to get a new switch bc i just want to run the engine before it is dropped in the festiva.
            thanks!

              i assumed this was similiar to the festiva, but it was not..(as i didn't have my wiring diagram yet)
              got my haynes in the mail yesterday and the BLK and BLUE wires need to be twisted together, not BLK, GRN/RED.... just to clarify for future reference.
