Denguy, I think it might our knees that constantly hit the winder. My drivers side winder shaft broke right at the base of the splines. I ended up taking apart a Escort winder and installing it into the Festiva winder.
I could never figure out how the brake action of the winder worked, so to hold my window up I use a loop of shoestring from the arm rest to hold it up!
Aspires and Sways all around, Miata B6 installed, KYB G2Rs just installed in front. Wish for coil overs someday.

How does this damn winder come apart? I have a call into a junk yard right now regarding a festiva regulator...... called at 8am... he told me he'd call me back in a couple hours....... now its 11am....... I'm too impatient I guess.

You took apart the escort winder..... does that mean it wouldnt just bolt right up in place of the entire festiva regulator?

I'm wondering if the base of the shaft broke on mine as well....... I can turn it all day long, nothing happens.....

Normally, there are external springs on each wire. When the wires are carefuly wound in the groove, a slight bit of tension is applied to the spring by overwinding slightly and then slipping the winding gear into the hub. The wires wind in opposite directions. As one wire winds off the grooved plastic gear, the other wire winds onto the same gear on the opposite side. The wires are held in place by swaged stops (similar in principle to a parking brake). The size of the gear dictates how many turns and when the window will either bottom out or hit the top. The gear is sized to allow the spring to engage slightly and provide the necessary tension to hold the glass in position.

So is it true an escort window regulator/winder will bolt in so I can remove the screw that's holding up my window?

You will have better luck interchanging regulators with mazda vehicles considering the festiva has very little to do with ford.

I know for a fact protege power regulators work if you drill new holes.

Hey Stefan, can you enlighten me more on how the Protege window regulators fit. Did you have to drill new holes for the crank assembly or the track part or both. Is the travel of the unit the correct amount so the window goes fully up and down. I have had no luck finding a new one and it looks like the ones for the Pride if they fit are all power units.

Can get the protege part pretty reasonable at aprox $60 would rather have new than used it it will work properly.

Thank you for any advice you can give.
