  • Blower Motor ticking noise?

When I turn on the fan in the car for heat I hear a ticking noise. Kind of like something is stuck in the fan area........ but the faster I turn up the motor, the faster it ticks and louder it gets.

Could I possibly have a bad blower motor bearing? How hard is it to get in there and swap out the blower motor?

    Thanks!

Funny thing is......... I have no pine needles where I park, but there are a bunch in the grate up by the hood where the air comes in. They were there from previous owner and I haven't been able to clean them out yet.

Any easy way to get in to the blower and suck it out?

On my 1988 there are a couple of plates on the firewall that get access to the space under the grate in front of the windshield. One is behind the wiper motor.

You might snake a vacuum hose down on either side to get out what has fallen.

It is a pain to get to the blower. I am stripping my terminally damaged Red Rocket, and am sure the dash has to come out to get to the heater / AC part.

I have the factory manual for the 1988 and can look up the steps for you. Yours may be different.

I replaced the wiring harness, engine, trans, front suspension, & brakes in the Black Rocket with pieces from the Red.

Both 1988, different AC mounts, different wiring harness.

I would run the fan a lot and see if whatever is in there wears or breaks off.

As long as it is not dragging enough to pull the fan speed down, it should do no harm.

Ya, maybe tomorrow I'll try to clean out the vent area........ I'm hoping its just a pine needle or something in there....... it was pretty dirty when I first brought it home...

I really don't want to tear apart the dash to replace anything.. I don't have THAT much motivation.... hahahaha

It's just a weird ticking sound..... gets louder and faster when I crank up the fan. Hmmm

            Stay tuned

You should be able to pull a bracket from under the steering column and a duct tube and have access to remove the blower motor and clean it out.
Labor guide calls for a bit over half and our to R&R blower motor without a/c so def not a big job.

I just changed mine with AC. Took some imagineering, a few choice words, and some contortion but it's doable without removing anything except the driver side duct that runs along the lower edge of the dash, below the steering column.

I did however remove the throttle pedal stop bolt to gain a little more access.

BTW, mine was making a ticking sound before it got to the point of tapping the motor to get it to work.

Hope yours is only the pine needles.

This is very good to know! I figured there was a way to do it without removing the dash. I had a car before and the manual said to remove tire and inner fenderwell, and other stuff to remove the blower motor. I got it out under the dash directly out of the housing. 15 minute removal.
I guess thats called "reverse engineering".

My blower motor went out about a month ago. I had the ticking noise and like lessersivad said, I could get it to start up again after tapping it.

I ordered a replacement from autozone for like $100 with overnight shipping and it didn't come with the fan, so you might have to switch the fan from the old to the new one. O'Reilly had them too.

If yours is located under the dash on the drivers side, have fun lol. I had to lay upside down with my head by the clutch and it was a tight squeeze getting the thing in and out. Good luck.

I got mine from Advance Auto. They had the cheapest price of all the ones I checked.

$42.79 before tax. This was for the AC equipped. The one for non AC was approx. double the price.

I think there may have been a glitch in their pricing, but I didn't mention what other places were getting.

As damacha1 mentioned, if yours goes in the drivers side it's a bit tight.

Not impossible so just take your time. It WILL go in.

Oh BTW, the one I bought didn't come with the "squirrel cage" either.
