  • 4th gear not working after tranny swap

We just put replaced the stock 4 speed with a 5 speed in my 89 festiva. When we took it for a test drive it wouldn't shift into 4th gear. All the others work great. Does this sound like a clutch issue (clutch plate was replaced while we were at it) or is the transmission crap and need to be taken back out. We were thinking the clutch pedal linkage cable might need to be adjusted, but I'm wondering if anyone else has had this problem.

its the tranny... 4th is gone.... my moms yota has the same problem.. no 5th gear. if it shifts every gear but 4th then its not the clutch... and the shift linkage is not adjustable.

Unfortunately, the transmission is typically the weak link on these cars and is what usually send them to the junk yard. I had to rebuild mine after going to a yard and getting one that was worse than the one I took out. They are a little tricky to rebuild but the parts are still available. If interested I have a freshly rebuilt 4 speed that I used while I rebuilt the 5 speed (actually I rebuilt it after I put the rebuilt 5 speed back in). It is ready to ship from Baltimore, MD. I would want $150 plus the shipping costs. I sincerely doubt if you will find a healthy transmission for a Festiva in any junk yard. Perhaps you might get lucky if it in there with some body damage, but if it is in fairly good shape, odds are it was the trans that sent it there.

As proof of them being the weak link I'm on my 3rd trany now. The last ones blew the spiders out the bottom! Not a good time...... last time was on the 4th of july and I was stranded....

Make sure your shift rod connection at the transaxle is not running into interference with the transmission member. you will someone to try to put into 4th while youi watch that connection.

Your 4th may be out, mine is not going to last much longer.

you have to replace the shift knob with one that has "5" on it... if you don't, you'll have weird issues...
