  • Check Engine light question

I have an 88L carby and when you maintain a cruising speed of 55, 60, or 65 the check engine light will come on after about a 1/2 hour or so and more frequently after it pops on for the first time. If you burb it, or just take your foot off the gas for a second and re-apply it will go out immediately. Any ideas on what it may be? There are no codes to tell me a thing. ECU possibly going south?

Does it run any different when on??

Sounds like an egr issue to me, possibly just carbon build up in the egr passages or possibly a split vac hose in the egr system.

No, it doesn't act any different. But I have never pulled the EGR valve, so I can start there. The vacuum lines are new about a year ago, but I will have a look at them.

Sure, if you can't see the problem, it doesn't exist.

Oh say it isn't so JPT!
                    I got respect for you.
You know it was likely a failing pressure sensor on the back of the engine below the intake manifold, and I think, to the left of the oil filter.

Fairly easy to replace, maybe more difficult to find the correct part.

Tell me you at least checked the oil pressure to make sure it was OK before pulling the bulb.

Hey, going to be up your way Thursday and Friday, or at least closer than I'm now. Have and interview in Kingston, RI Friday.
But flying into Providence, RI on Thursday.
Drop me a PM and see if we can't meet somewhere.

LOL! You KNOW I was kidding, right?

I'd love to meet you, but I'm not sure I can. Work has me very busy now. The holidays are over and thousands of older cars are now coming out of the rental fleet.

Good time to buy a used car. Especially before all the dealerships buy them up for the President's Day car sales.

mine did this until i unplugged a vacuum line
                        never comes on now
unfortunately i don't have a digital camera to take a picture of which line i unplugged...
it has something to do with emissions if i am not mistaken... arty had me rehook it up at the 4thstiva event and the light started coming back on again and i ended up unhooking it and plugging that line again
i have no idea what it is called because well i'm stupid like that...

I have killed a bulb on a warning system one time. My wife had an 87 escort when I met her. The low coolant light was ALWAYS on. She had it to the shop many times to have it checked. Coolant was never low, the shop couldn't figure out why the light stayed on. So, I pulled the bulb. Problem solved. Eventually, Ford had a recall on the sensor, which was faulty and caused the warning light to be on all the time.

Cleaning the EGR valve is pretty simple. Just be carefull not to let any dirt or carbon fall into the engine at the port when the valve is removed.
