Not sure what would cause the car to buck in all gears. It was driving normal and then started to buck almost like it was not in gear. After about 7 miles it started to work again. I did shift into n and let it coast down a hill and then put it back into 5th gear. The car is an 88 lx. All original. Any suggestions? Thank you

When I hear the term "bucking" applied to the performance of a car, I imagine that to be the result of a quick alternation between power and no power to the wheels. Perhaps that can be attributed to a transmission problem, but I have only observed it when an engine is misfiring. Are you sure your engine is not at fault?

When I first got my '89 LX it did the same thing. Double check your timing and ignition system first. Examine vacuum lines closely for leaks or being hooked up wrong. Possibility the carb needs rebuilding, but save that for last. I kept improving mine but the one thing that actually fixed it was replacing the o2 sensor. It makes sense because the feedback carb uses the o2 sensor reading to adjust the air/fuel ratio. A bad one could possibly make it run too lean, causing a lean stumble. Also check the vacuum advance for air leaks. I had to replace my distributor because of a huge vacuum leak. Hope this helps. If all else fails put a Weber on it. increases power but on mine it reduced my MPG's.

Thank you all for the advice. I too, think it was the fuel filter. It did this after I had filled the tank. I replaced it and so far no problems. Plus it turns out the car sat for 5 years it was started and the guy kept very little fuel in it but, I also think it had just a touch of "bad" fuel and it worked its way out.Early '88 LX. All original 1.3l w/ 5sp. Call it "Big Red" :toothy7:

One thing you could try is to unhook the vacuum hose that goes to the side of the breather (passenger side) and plug it up. Then the ABC valve won't have any effect. Might help, I don't know. Oops, sorry I didn't see that you already had it repaired. This might help for the ones that are bucking in 2nd gear though. That's what mine used to do.Last edited by zoe60; 01-24-2011, 01:29 PM.
