  • Pops out of 4th

Ok, problem started the other day and is getting worse quickly. If I'm driving around in 4th, it'll pop out of gear if I try to feather the throttle. It seems to stay in gear fine if I'm accelerating, but if I try to just maintain my speed in 4th I have to hold the shifter to keep it from sliding into half-neutral.

I know some of you have had this happen. Is this a prelude to a total tranny failure? It only does it in 4th so far as I can tell. Are there any quick fixes or am I completely screwed?

Maybe your shifter linkage is caught, loose or binding.

Have you changed the tranny fluid lately? Mercon III doesn't hold up in the transmissions that long. Mine was thin as water at 30-35K. Also while you have it in the air spray the linkages with graphite lock spray. I still have problems with it popping it out of 2nd/3rd but I think that's because I shift to fast. But it does shift alot better.

New problem. Sounds like my throwout bearing's going out. I'm getting a scraping chattering sound that goes away when I press the clutch down. Never had clutch issues with a car before. If the bearing goes out, will it only eat up the clutch or am I looking at replacing the flywheel as well? How long might it live before I need to take it off the road?

If it is popping out of gear and now you got noise I doubt it is your throw out brg. T/O brg has no effect on it coming out of gear , you may have internal issues , I would start with the fluid change ,that may get you by for awhile but if it is grinding the damage is already started ,and if it is internal, the noise will stop when the internal rotation of the tranny stops , and no a T/O brg will not tear up you flywheel I just went thru all this back in Nov. I am not saying that the T/O brg is bad or not , just that the noise now makes me think it is more .Good luck

Well here's a third issue. When I'm driving down the road with the car in gear and the clutch engaged (foot off the pedal), I get an intermittent clicking noise. Doesn't happen with the clutch in or the car in neutral. Doesn't happen when the car is stopped. CV or tranny problem?

I think I broke my car.

What do your CV boots look like? If they're torn then dirt could get in and cause the clicking. If that's the case, it's time for new CV joints.

Well here's what confuses me as far as it possibly being as CV problem:
