  • cold idle speed??

When i first start my car in the morning it idles very low ~200- 300RPM. I have herd that there is something that puts more fuel into the motor when the engine is cold so it idles higher.

I need to get this fixed does anyone know how much it would cost about?? i think that it just needs adjusting.

start it and let it warn up, once it has run for a little bit just enough to move the temp guage a little shut it down, wait 5 min start it again and post ur idle. If u still feel it needs adjusting there is a screw on the top of the fuel injection by the tube that comes from ur air intake adjust that. It is in the workers manual.

it's supposed to do that. I don't know the technical terms but there is a sensor/module that kicks the idle up on a cold start and then as the car warms it idles down to normal. If it is warm out the car does not need to this and will not idle high at start.

how are you gauging that the car is idling at 200-300 rpms? If you have a stock tach the first line is 500 rpms. If the needle is in the little area before that then it is idling low for sure....might need to replace the high idle module (sorry but I do not know the correct term for it)

At cold start the IAC..Idle Air control...opens to allow more air into the engine....the VAF...VAne Air FLow oicks up this increase in flow and the ECU then compensates with more fuel.

What to check for with idel problems at cold start up:

Vacuum leaks or air intake duct leaks....this wil cause false readings at the VAF

Coroded ignition contacts...inside the rotor cap area...or a bad/loose spark plug or wire.

The IAC is pretty hard to diagnose...the coil is PWM...pulse width modulated and has a hot water wax motor over-ride. Many ownwers have taken them out of the car and sprayed all the ports with Gum-Out with some sucess.

The Engine temp sensor...I forget the acronym...could also be a problem...I have never seen a test spec for it...Ω/°F. A s50*3e resistance check to see that it's not open wouldn't hurt.

The VAF itself could be a problem...but...the seldom go bad and would be bad all the time...not just a cold start.

The Throttle Position Switch....TPS...should be checked for a closed position at idle.

That's enough...I want to refill my cocktail glass before dinner!

Low idle: stuck IAC, induce a vaccum leak and the idle should rise.

high idle when cold: normal, ECT (engine coolent temp) sensor waits till it sees about 100* F before the ECM starts to lower the idle.

But should the high idle be around 2,000 rpm's? when cold that's what is happening.........

saturns scream to 2500 when they're cold, so 2000 isn't out of hand, BUT it is a bit high for a typical festy. clean out your throtle body with a brush and brake clean.
