Whistling sound coming from air intake...

Need help...

There is a whistling sound which seems like it is coming from the air intake or possibly the idle control. It gradually stops breifly on acceleration but returns quickly on deceleration. Sounds like a tea pot boiling. This is a 93 festiva with a 91 Protege DX B8 swap with f-series 5 speed tranny. Any ideas what this could be. Couldn't find any vacuum leaks but maybe...

Definately sounds like a vac. leak to me. Have you tried the old trick using starting fluid/ether? If not you can check easily by spraying a little bit around any vac. Hoses and or connections. Also around your intake itself. Good luck and let us know what happens.

So how do you use starting fluid to check for vac leaks? Is it like using spit or water on a tire to find a leak?

My 89 ( carbed B3) did this for about the first month after I got it. Always on deceleration. Don't really know what the problem was. Went through the whole tune up/plugs/wires/filters change, and the problem was gone. But I don't really know what caused it.

Superdave, using starter fluid to check for vac leaks is simple. Spray it in there, if you get a change in idle speed, you have found your leak.

Found the vacuum leak...throttle body gasket.

I`m dealing with that gasket too........

I had the throttle body *partially* off, and buggered the gasket in doing so.
In order for me to change the valve cover gasket, I had to also partially remove the throttle body to allow for the height needed for the valve cover to clear the rockers underneath.

After bolting everything back down, I got that whistling leak sound too. So, unbolted the EFI again, slid forward on stud, but it can`t come off the stud as it hits the valve cover as stated earlier, and gummed it up with gasket sealer. Still have the leak.......grrrrrr. Going to have to try again.

How have you found removing the EFI from the manifold?

I am not having this problem because I have a B8. The throttle body is mouted to the DS of the air intake. I just need to replace the gasket and this issue should dissapate.
