  • why is it jumping?

when i am accelerating the car doesnt actually jump but it bucks like it isnt getting enough gas or something....does anyone else have this problem....it has about 100,XXX miles....also the shifter moves while it is in gear. it is incrediably annoying...
also it runs very well until i am really getting on it and it doesnt feel like it is the trans
    thanks

check the fuel filter, should be replaced every 30,000miles

Check the distributor cap for moisture

Check the Vane Air Flow meter (VAF) on top of your Air filter and make sure the Air door moves freely

Check the Engine Mounts (open the hood and goose the throttle from inside the car with the parking brake on and in gear) to see if the engine moves too much in forward and reverse gears

o2 sensor seemed to clear up similar symptoms for me.

It is possible it is the O2 sensor. Disconnect the sensor from the wiring harness and give the car a run. You might get a check engine light, but the open loop fuel map will keep the air fuel ratio safe during your test.
You did not mention the year, is it a 93 and fuel injected? If it is carbureted then it is almost certainly the carb that is misbehaving.

Your check engine light could be on for other reasons.
Do you know how to check the engine codes?
Better yet, make your own post in the repair forum with all the info you have on the car and problem, and you'll get more specific advice for your issue. Which maybe different from this problem.

yup, unplug it. this will force the ECU to use preset values for the o2 sensor and should throw a light but it will still run. also clean the contacts to the TPS, festys use a "switch" style as opposed to the full sweep style of most other engines.

                      Here is much data:

Post your Festiva or Aspire repair and maintenance issues. - USE THIS FORUM FOR ANY TECHNICAL RELATED POST (IE. How do I change my oil?, How to remove axle from tranny?, etc)

Just make sure you ground the correct female connector (ST1), as there is more than one single female connector in that area!

BTW, searching is not a crime!

OK, I'll give you that one!

Chances are whoever your dad wants to takes it to will not know as much about the car and its systems as you will find accumulated on this site.
Not to mention they will charge you for work that doesn't fix the car.
Send your dad the link to this site and see if he can use the info above to help solve your cars problem
