Fuel tank... Replaced!

I finally got my new fuel tank from Rockauto.com in the mail today! All appeared normal except for a dent. Oh well! I installed it all according to the Haynes manual and it all seemed to go in fine.

The "issue" I'm having (whether it is an issue or not will be resolved by your responses) is that the tank seems to build up pressure... I put in a small amount of gas to get me to the gas station, when I got there the gas cap hissed when I opened it. I filled it half way and drove back home. I checked it again and it did the same thing. The hiss appears to be from built up pressure, not a vacuum, but I could be wrong.

My car is fuel injected.

Is this normal, or did I hook something up wrong?

did you hook up all the vent lines? i believe one went to the filler neck one went to a charcoal canister, and i cant remember where the other went. i think my tank did the same but it sounded more like a suction,

Yes, I definately hooked up all the lines. I marked them too, but obviously the markings wore off as I was trying to pull them off... I am 95% sure I hooked up all the lines the same way they were before...

Perhaps this is just normal? Or perhaps I hooked up some hoses in a reverse order? My old tank had a leak in it and the fuel pump gasket was leaking so that would explain why I'd never experienced the pressure, or vacuum.

it's normal for a tank to build up to 3 psi of pressure. most vent solenoids release at 2 psi but we don't have a tank pressure sensor that i'm aware of.

Hmmmm.... Well I guess I'll keep an eye(ear?) on it and hope for the best. The pressure wasn't alarming or anything, Kind of like opening a soda bottle only not as powerful obviously.

Hissing is normal. Every vehicle I've owned has done it, except my truck, it doesn't have a gas cap.

My Festiva, my Intrepid, and my Swift all did the same thing.
I wouldn't worry.

Emission testing involves your tank and the cap itself. Maybe you can drop by a place and buy them some tacos just to check your evap when they arent busy. If its hissing its holding, as long as the other hoses are going somewhere you should be fine.

No trying to jack...but is a new tank a better idea than to use one that has been sitting with 1/4 tank about 7 years?

You mean better than using the stock one? Mine had holes in it and a leak in the gasket around the fuel pump, so it needed to be replaced. I'm sure so long as you get the old gas out of there it would be fine to use. You'd probably just want to make sure there is no sludge or sediment in the bottom. Obviously don't use the gas!

Yeah i figured by location you deal with holes more than i ver would. I might be getting a GL auto but its been sitting. Cant pass up the deal, even if i just put it back on the road and resell.

My stock tank had a drain plug, which I only noticed after removal, I imagine in your case that would make getting the nasty old gas out much easier. Mind you if you're trying to get it all out of there and maybe rinse it with some fresh gas you might consider removing it. I got the whole job done in about 4 hours by myself. It's pretty straight forward.
