  • Master cylinder - bottom reservoir seal leak

So I just completed my aspire brake swap and it is time for the bleeding....
my master cylinder is a hair under 2 years old.. (March 09 I put in a re-man) and now it is leaking at the seal at the bottom of the reservoir canister which mates to the top of the master cylinder main housing..

If i take the master cylinder out, can this seal be replaced or something? Normally the seals go bad on the inside of the MC on the bore... This is the front seal, there also is a rear seal...

Will that reservoir cup just pull out of the master cylinder? Thanks in advance.

-Escort GT 91 donor car with BP, G5M-R tranny to be dropped in the little guy...
    -Aspire brake swap COMPLETE!

Here's an exploded view from Mitchell's

There's a snap ring that retains the primary piston, once you get the primary out there is a stop screw that holds the secondary. And yes, the reservoir just pulls straight up and out, usually takes some wiggling but it will come loose. Make sure you siphon off as much fluid as you can first, it will go everywhere when the reservoir finally pops loose! Hope this helps.

EJP, this has been written about and solved by Zanzer.
And I have the Norprene shown in the thread available if you need some, just PM me.
      Zanzer's reservoir fix thread:

Did this fix to mine a year ago, still all good.

Yes, that is correct. When mine was leaking, I had a new MC with new grommets in it, and it still leaked at the reservoir/grommet. Did the Norprene fix, problem solved. I had to buy 10 ft of the Norprene to get the 2 one half long pcs! So I have plenty.

thinking of this fix.... is there a sealant out there that resists brake bluid? or that doesn't break down with brake fluid.... just curious......

^^^ If you find one let me know. Lol, brake fluid loves to eat things. I've stripped the paint off many poorly painted alloy wheels with it in the past

Oh, and I misread your original post, I thought you were asking about removing the piston cups, not the actual reservoir cup... my bad

I wouldnt use a sealant. There is prolly one or two that will work, but will eventually leak, and then you will have a bigger mess to work with.
The Norprene is fantastically tough. The brake fluid doesnt affect it, and it will out last the car. I have used it. It works. We all like things that work.

did the repair suggested by drddan (thanks man!), the neoprene sleeve was the ticket to this repair.
