  • Oxygen Sensor

I'm sure this has been gone over a zillion times, but the o2 sensor is located
on the lower left front of the engine (just in front of the grill) below the manifold. The sensor can be removed w/o getting under or lifting up the car. Correct? 7/8 open wrench, some rust breaking spray and getting the car warmed up. I'm sure it won't be this simple, but mostly wanted to know location. Thanks!

The O2 sensor is located on the left side of the exhaust manifold on the front of the engine.
It is located where I put a plug at the very bottom of the red exhaust manifold in the picture.

Hello bastille10, i just went through this on my 92 GL, was not that bad, don't bother with the split socket, cut senser wire off at the senser, put on 7/8 socket and long breaker bar, 24" or longer, hold firmly with left hand and smack it hard with heavy hammer, don't be timmid, but make sure the socket is on firm and square, smack it hard. Good luck

it seems like this little car is a lot of work! I expected changing my 02 sensor to be a quick and easy task. I appear to be wrong so far! I cannot seem to easily access this thing at all. Are you supposed to take something off in order to fit a breaker bar in there? I can barely fit a socket wrench in there let alone turn it! what are some tips and tricks to taking off the oxygen sensor?

Your not reusing it right? Cut wire off and use a socket. Or buy the socket meant for it. Then use a 2ft or longer ratcheting breaker bar through the grille opening. I always cut the plastic plug on the end of the wire so i can slide a wrench over it.
Jerk on it rather than just pulling hard

It also helps to tap firmly with a hammer on the wrench, socket or breaker bar, to set up vibration, which will help break it free. Use anti-seize on the new one. And yes, do this on a warm manifold, not hot or cold.

No i'm not reusing it but I already got the socket that goes around the wire and it fits nice n snug so I don't think im gonna cut the wire. I will definitely use your guys tips but my problem is I can't even really get anything in there other than a small socket wrench. the hose that goes over the engine is right in the way on the top, and a whole bunch of stuff is in the way from the bottom. I thought about removing the hose but there were so many clamps and hoses connected to it, seemed overwhelming. What should I remove so I can have more swing room?

Get your camera out and take a picture so you will know how it all goes back together. You will need to logically decide what needs to move in order for you to get the wrench or breaker bar in a position that engages the O2 sensor and also allows you to turn it. Remember counter clockwise to loosen. Just keep a level head and plan your moves in advance and you will get it.

Question Might sound silly. Why did you plug it?

I'm guessing you're talking about the plastic air intake tube, right? Yeah it needs to come off, but it's no big deal. Just look at how it's fastened and go for it. Once you've done it once, it will make sense, and you can pull it in 1 - 2 minutes the next time.

When you re-install it, remember that the throttle cable is on top of the intake tube, not under it.

guys I feel like everything I try to do on this car ends up harder than it should. I took the intake tubes off and had pretty good access to it. I thought I was turning the bolt but when I took a closer look I realized that I was just starting to strip it. I can't get it to budge. I was using that stupid socket meant for oxygen sensors but then I realized that a regular 7/8 wrench worked just as well, but it doesnt matter now, it's stripped. I might just put my car back together and leave it be. I am getting my engine swapped this summer so it doesn't matter that much, right?
