  • Front Wheel Bearings and Proper Adjustment

The 1988 Mazda 323 and the 91 Festiva use the same front wheel bearings and the same spacers between the inner and outer bearing to set a preload on the bearings. Don't reuse your old spacer when changing bearings without checking the preload to determine if the old spacer is the right size. Green Sales (they sell obsolete ford parts) 800-543-4959 has some of the spacers for $5.00 each. Mazda has them for the 1988 323 for $5.50 each.

Can anyone tell me how to tell which spacer is needed without going through them in series until to correct one is found. It's not practical to have all 21 of the spacers on hand when you do the job. It would cost $231.00 to be prepared to do both wheels and you would have a loss of $220.00 because you would only use two of the spacers for the job.

    In case anyone wants to know the spacers are 6.285, 6.325, 6.365, 6.405, 6.445, 6.485, 6.525, 6.565, 6.605, 6.645, 6.685, 6.725, 6.756, 6.805, 6.845, 6.885, 6.925, 6.965, 7.005, 7.045, 7.085 in width, approximately 1/4" to give you a rough idea of the size of the part.

If anyone has a good solution to this problem please let me know.

Ford had a spacer selection tool kit, (got mine on ebay for 20 bucks), that you installed like a big bolt, washer and nut thru the bearings/spacer/hub assembly. then you torque the tool down in 4 increments to like 145 ftlbs. You then rotate the hub to seat the bearings. You then take an inch pound torque wrench to measure to see how much torque it takes to spin the bolt. If the torque reading is like 2 to 10 then the current spacer is good. If it is less then 2 you need a thinner spacer, if it is more than 10 you need a thicker spacer. Going up or down 1 spacer number is equal to like 1.5 to 3.5 inch pounds or something like that. I did it a year or so ago and my original spacers worked fine. I think we have a couple of Ford mechanics on the board who can correct what ever I got wrong.
