Today I put the front end up on jack stands (wheels off), started up the engine, and put 'er in gear. Got out and went for a listen. The noisy side wasn't turning so I shut off the engine and wedged the plastic lid off a container in the caliper of the quiet side so the noisy side would rotate. Started up the engine and put 'er in gear again. Used a piece of hose for a stethoscope and traced the noise down to the outer axle bearing. Was able to eliminate the wheel bearings, transmission, and other end of the axle as possible sources of the noise.
