Yes. Change clutch. Surface flywheel and change rear main seal. At minimum . Everything else can be done in car at a later date.

Engine removal is not that difficult, Remove all the 10mm, 14mm and 17mm bolts from the bell housing and dust shield. Disconnect the wiring harness connections, which it appears you already know where they are. Remove the lower dust shield and spin the engine over removing the 4 -14mm Torque converter bolts, or just yank it with the engine and remove it after you pull it. Then the 14mm engine mount bolt that runs through the body on the right inner fender. I almost forgot, you will need to remove the starter prior to removing the Bell housing bolts. It will be a bit tight coming up out with the trans in the car.

I would recommend a new clutch because you will have new parts and an alignment tool to line up the clutch when it is re-installed. They come in the kit. I would also recommend replacing the pilot bearing in the flywheel which comes in the kit. They are super easy to install while the fly wheel is off the engine. Tap out the old and tap in the new.

Lastly, for ease of installation I would pull your mtx and bolt it to your engine before you drop it in. It makes it easier to align everything. I can email you the manual pages if you PM me your email. Factory Manual has a bunch of helpful pictures.

as far as pulling the engine without the trans, at the bottom of the trans closest to the oil pan there is an inspection plate (plastic), remove that and then rotate the engine, removing the 3? torque converter bolts from the flex plate. once those are off and you remove the 4 bellhousing bolts, that side of the engine is loose.

          Today.
I got the engine hoist and went to the junkyard. They closed at 2 and 45 mins wasn't enough time so we didn't get the engine today.
I work tonight at 5 so I've stopped working on things for the evening. I've gotten my starter out and got things ready to pull the block in my car. Should have it out by tomorrow night.

Now then. An engine. The Aspire we were looking at has so many differences such as A/C, ATX, intake manifold, EVAP things. I don't know how to get it out, then get things working in a Festiva. There's a Festy two cars over with 181K miles. The engine looks fine and the tranny shifts. We couldn't get it running because there's no gas but it sounds ok when it cranks.

Someone here offered a running B3 for $50 I believe. If anyone here has a B3 they'd be willing to part with, I'd drive some distance to pick it up, such as Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, OK, LA, up to about 500 miles one way.
My dad's reasoning is that he'd rather spend $400 to get a known good engine then pay $300 to pull one from a junkyard that may or may not work.

I appreciate suggestions and offers and have a week before I could even get around to pulling a junkyard engine.

you need a turbo socket set to get it off.

B3's are small enough where once I changed a B3 and me and a friend lifted the engine out by hand, so if you didn't get an engine hoist already I'd suggest just lifting it by hand

Where do you get those? I Googled the company but they don't tell you were to buy the sockets.

On google, use the "shopping" function at the top to see retailers of the item you want.

Looks like Turbo sockets are a bit expensive, but you should be able to either buy just the one size TS you need, or you could go to Sears or even HF and buy a set of bolt removers that work the same way, though maybe not as well. In the meantime, soak that sucker with PB Blaster.

If you don't trust yourself, then take it to a machine shop and I'm sure they'd be able to get that bolt off for a buncha money.

It sounds like you have friends and family that are able to help you with the work and tools you need. You can do this!

                      Good luck!

sorry, i use the term turbo socket loosely... i would use the craftsman version without hesitation.

a word of advice: tap the socket on with a small hammer and then SLOWLY start to back the nut off, the socket will continue to grab and pull itself onto the nut untill it comes loose.

I got the engine out today.
I took off the clutch and it looks ok. How do you tell if they're worn? I also took off the alternator and put the engine in the bed of my truck for storage. (Truck has a broken rear differential and can only limp around in 4HI so it's just a storage bin right now)

look for hot spots on the flywheel as well as cracking, even small ones are BAD.

I got a new engine today. Had it home by 11 am. Just finished putting everything back together around midnight.
                              Now it won't start.
Engine cranks, but will not run. The gas gauge shows about 1/8 and I can smell gas out the exhaust pipe. I've check spark from the coil and from the plugs.
When the engine cranks, it will pause every rotation to every five rotations.
(ex. crank pause crank pause crank crank crank pause, etc.)
The old engine did not do this and I'm using the same starter.

I'm calling it a night for now. If anyone has any ideas for no-run, let me know please

Check your battery charge and connections as well as your ground and power wires. Make sure all your connections are clean and tight. Make sure that wires havent corroded apart from the terminals on the end.
