  • Fast Idle Reset?

It there any way to turn down the fast idle on a carborated festy? My dad has been having problems with his 89 festy since he got it a few years ago with the Fast Idle on start up. With it getting warm out he doesnt need the fast idle on and wants to know how to turn it down. When the fast idle is on it idles at 4000rpms and he doesnt want it doing that. Hes been a mechanic for years and has bought haynes manuals and none have been able to tell him accurately how to do it. so if there is anyone on here that could tell us where the setting for it is it would be very much appreciated. here are some pis he took of the carb:

so in other words, totally eliminating the cold start-high idle function i presume.. i'll leave that to another to answer as i know about the EFI side..

I had one that once it went to high idle it would never come down even when warmed up. I wired the choke closed. Took about 30-45 seconds to crank during the winter but otherwise no problems.

yeah the fast idle comes back down after the car warms up but he wants to be able to turn it off or at least adjust the fast idle back down for summer

On my 88 carbed Festiva I poke the accelerator pedal once when cold, crank, as soon as it catches poke the accelerator again and it immediately drops to normal idle.

If it is very cold - around freezing - the engine may stall. Another poke to reset choke and it will start, usually with slower idle.

It may be that the little notched catch on the fast idle is sticking and not dropping down as the engine warms.

Electric choke heater may not be working if it takes a long time for the engine rpm to drop.

When it is cold, poke the accelerator pedal one time and look at the carb, around back on both sides of the throttle shaft to see where everything is positioned. Start and run until warm and it idles normally, shut down and have another look.

It may just need a good spray with carb cleaner to free everything up.

thats what my dad does now. he'l poke the pedal and the idle will drop back down but slowly revs back up to fast idle and has to poke it again to drop it down but it comes right back up again and doesnt go down until the engine has warmed up.

All I meant by my post was that during the summer having the choke wired closed didn't really cause any problems. Doing that could be a temp fix until you figure out how to adjust it.

Spray the choke linkages when you spray the carb with carb cleaner. I don't have the problem when I plug in the block heater. The owner's manual says to use the gas pedal to cut the choke once the engine starts. Someone else wrote that he adjusted the fast idle screw to keep the engine from roaring to life. Another possibility is to get the ignition control module tested.

ok, take a look at your second picture. follow your throtle cable from the left untill it meets with the screw with a spring on it. now look directly above that screw/spring and you'll see another screw head in the shadows. that's your high idle set screw.

Also, check the choke wire, one end goes to the Alternator (plug - in) and the other end goes to the choke making sure you have good connections and nothing shorted out along the way.
