  • 4 or 5 Speed?

Can anyone tell me how to tell the difference between a 4 speed and 5 speed from the outside?

as far as i know they are identical, the 5 speed just has more crap inside. is the rest of the car still attached to it? gear shift might be your best way of telling

      Hope its a 5 speed!

Yes, I installed it yesterday. It is suppose to be a 5 speed. But I can't get into 5th gear. If I am not careful it will go back to 3rd.

        5 or 4 speed

This is for Tim and Karl...I think that my transmission was manufactured in 12/89 (NOT 12/90). Would this be considered a 90 model transmission. This transmission does have 3 sensors.

I can't tell you. I do know that some model years have build dates going a month or two back into the previous year.

I've never pulled an MTX tranny so I just can't say what the differences are.

If it has 3 switches on it, it's a 4-spd. If it has 2 switches, it's a 5-spd. The 3rd switch on the 4spds was for some idiot light on the dash that told you when to shift, probably the most useless idiot light ever conceived, unless perhaps it was intended to allow deaf people to drive a stick, but I expect even they can sense when to shift without an idiot light.
