Yeah. What's the tick. And also. I think I hear a whining sound from the timing "area" while driving so its hard to tell where that's coming from.

How many miles are on the car. By the looks, there is alot? Engine tick could be from a number of things. Engine whining near the timing "area" might be the waterpump possibly whining, or the bearings for the timing belts idler pulley are going bad. Also check the life of your water pump/ alt belt and see if its dry rotted or loose. Thats all I can suggest. After listening to the clip a few times, it sounds like a lifter tick. can't tell if its bad or not. Mine ticks alittle bit but goes away when revving it.

140,000 miles. I know the alt belt needs replaced and I'm gonna do the timing belt when I do the camshaft seal and crankshaft seal. if I can figure out how its done. Needing lots of work done.

You and me both man. I gotta rebuild a BP power plant while trying to get my 88lx in good running order so I have something to drive. Glad summer is almost here!

                Suggestions:
.... A kink in the throttle cable. I too have experienced this.
.... Adjust your valves. I adjusted mine to .012 intake and exhaust, runs very good. Check your manual before you do this.
.... And check out the other suggestions that have been offered here on this thread as well.
                .

Like boydg1 said. Adjust your valves. It sounds like you have an engine with mechanical lifters. Even adjusted correctly, you will still have a slight "tick". Your engine will never be as quiet as an engine with hydraulic lifters.
                  You gonna race that thing?

I found a set of hydraulic rocker arms and replaced the mechanical ones. Solved that annoying problem.
