Here's a shot of the area under the cam I was talking about. It's a little hard to get a sense of depth from the pic (I could have probably zoomed out a little more for a better pic) but you can see where there is a pocket between where the spring seats are cast (Y axis) and the cam towers (X axis). The only way oil can get out of this area with the cam in place is to slowly seep between the cam and the "bearing" journals. So you could see where it would take a while for oil to make it's way back to the pan.
