  • Quick ATX to MTX question

I am swapping a MTX trans into a 91 ATX car. What do yall do with the neutral safety switch? i really don't care if it's functional, it's my car.

you can hardwire it on, OR you COULD do it right and use the clutch switch to ground it...

It still has the ATX harness and I didn't see any provisions for the MTX plug ins. That was why I asked what others had done. I don't have a good complete MTX harness that I can swap it out with. The one MTX harness I do have has been hacked up or it would be a no brainer.

I had a Jeep CJ-7 without a neutral safety switch. All it takes is once and you will always remember to push in the clutch before turning the key, after that.

I did this swap, and I don't think there is a provision in the ATX harness for the nuetral safety switch by the clutch pedal... i just push in the clutch or make sure its in nuetral before i start.

I had the clutch safety switch removed in the gray festiva, you turn that key and your car will lurch forward a bit. On a side one if your engine ever dies in traffic you can use the starter to move the car out of traffic instead of pushing it

^^ What he said. I did the opposite on my stick to auto swap, after I finally removed the clutch pedal assembly I extended the wires out to the PRNDL switch on the trans and hooked them there.
                No festiva for me ATM...

Ok, I have a good manual engine harness. Will the MTX engine harness work ok with the ATX main harness? I was going to use it to delete all the wires that attached to the ATX. I believe it was 3 plugs that plugged in on top of the ATX. One for the reverse light switch, and the other 2? I am looking for the harness diagrams in the shop manual to figure it all out. But I really do apreciate the input, I figured yall who have done swaps had worked with this before.

Ok, picture 1 is the ATX park servo. Which wire's can I cross?

                    http://

The next is the ATX engine harness, I have a MTX harness but I just wanted to be sure I didn't need any of these.

                    http://

Since the ATX main harness doesn't have provisions for MTX I wanted to be sure I didn't need this switch.

                    http://

If this is to much trouble I may just repair my hacked up MTX main harness and put it in.

looks like the last switch you have pictured is a clutch release switch, NOT the safety switch.

Yes, I wasn't sure if I needed the release switch, I know the safety switch is the white one below it with the large wires and two prong plug.

You just need the connector that goes directly on the manual tranny for the Clutch switch. If your tranny didnt have it on there, just get that. Then splice that connectors's pig tail into where your neutral safety switch wires are. Just two wires to splice, but you need the connector that goes on the manual tranny. FYI I've seen a car jump into a wall cuz the safety switch was bypassed. Like someone said its a bad long term fix.

Just a quick update. I gave in and changed the main, engine and body harnesses today. I just went ahead and used everything from the MTX car. I changed the body harness too because I couldn't tell if the plug that went to the park servo was going to cause any further grief by not being plugged in to anything. Thank yall again for giving me advice. Sometimes it is just worth it do it right and complete especially since I have everything torn apart. I hate doing things twice.
