I always use a seal puller but a large flat head screw driver should pop it out too. Pretty much anything you can get behind the metal housing of the seal and pry it out.
If a hammer doesn't fix it you have an electrical problem
If the metal seal casing is tearing, try using something a little wider to pry with. Maybe a small crowbar or something with a little more surface area so it doesn't try to rip through the metal lip. I've had ones that have been in for years that try to rip like that when you remove them... it's pretty annoying.
