  • Belt Woes

So i purchased my now 3rd 88 festiva and during the summer i had a squealing belt from the alt/water-pump belt, it broke got it replaced at a show, 2 days later broke again, they fixed it for free and said my alt arm was bent, they fixed it. car worked great for a long time. now December came, belt starting squealing again, and the belt finally broke the other day, i replaced it, 2 days later broke again.
What do they mean when the arm is bent... like the actually arm of the alt, or the mounting arm?
Anyone know how to fix such thing
Call many places in the area no one has an alt for my car, let alone it is not worth getting a new one, since the car was only 100 dollars.
(side question- my car does very short distances before over heating while the belt is not on, why does the car idle higher/ when i turn the car off sometimes the engine will turn over again while the key is out)

    Thank you in advance

    Belt toubles

Calvin, Make sure your alternator can spin fairly easy by hand (with the belt off) If it's really draggin (hard to turn) this may be some of your troubles. Can't say much about your attachment arm or bracket without seeing what's goin on. The belt should run a fairly straight track around all the pulleys (not canted at an angle). Maybe if your needen some help on how things should look, try findin someone that has a Festy and you can open the hood and compare. Sometimes with a $100 car it's been worked on alot and things are messed up pretty good.
Your engine continuing to run after the key is out sounds like Dieseling. It's got some hot spot in the combustion chamber and keeps the engine tring to run by igniting the fuel without the spark plug. Also your engine may try to run at a higher rpm to help circulate coolant to cool engine down. Hope this may help!
