    How do you work with the castle nut?

    In reference to my previous thread in the [FS/WTB] forum, as found here http://www.fordfestiva.com/forums/sh...ad.php?t=36910.

    How do I go about making the left hand rear spindle work as a right hand spindle?

    Mount it up with the same bolts and buy a stake nut or castle nut (whichever applies) that matches the thread direction. I always forget which is which, but one side is reverse threaded.

      so the mounting to the backing plate is no different? I'll just get two castle nuts in that case for the same side can't wait to see the look on my local parts person's (James, yeah I'm in there all the time so I just call him by his name) face when I tell him my car has two left feet...

        The left and right spindle are completely interchangeable as far as mounting is concerned. The only difference is the thread direction on the end of the spindle. I never understood why the engineers thought they needed a right thread for one side and a left thread for the other side. The washer that goes under the nut is made so that it can't turn so there is no way the wheel turning could cause the nut to unscrew if the thread direction was wrong. I never give the thread direction a second thought. If it's a good spindle, it goes on either left or right.

              passenger side is reverse thread. (i've screwed multiple up because i for get )

                  the reason the threads are reversed on the passenger side so that it matches the normal tire rotation. doing this ensures that the nuts can't self-tighten and lock up the bearings. this doesn't, however, keep the outer bearings from siezing to the spindle due to lack of regular lubrication.
                  Trees aren't kind to me...

                    Bicycles are reverse threaded - pedals and crank cones. Since I work on bikes I remember to check when working on other vehicles. Now you know to check when working on bicycles.

                      You cant work with the Castle Nut. The best thing to do is just send him to the Gallows.
