  • Here we go again.....

Ok, heres the story. Dont mind me if my typing doesn't make much sense, im so flustered with this thing i cant think straight.

My aspire swapped (engine as well) festiva would run great when you first started it up. After a few minutes, it would die, and when a restart was tried, it would almost act flooded, and hit a good bit of compression (enough so the started couldnt turn it over) So, if you bumped the key from start to on, than back to start, it would crank over again and than hit this "vapor lock" spot again.

After checking the CEL codes, I found a Code 09 (coolant temp sensor) I had requested in another thread some info on testing the sensor, but no one responded back. So, I replaced the sensor with a new one.

Well, now the car no longer "vapor locks" but it still has a hard time starting. When it does start, it will idle at maybe 100-150 rpm, very roughly for a few minutes, than will die out. No more codes though.

Im stumped on this one. Big time. The only thing aspire on the motor is really the block and all internals. This engine ran excellent in the aspire, and i didn't have it apart, so i cant be blamed on that. The intake, injectors, and the like are from the car that im working on now.

The plugs, wires, cap and rotor are all new, as is the Coolant Temp Sensor. I could possibly post a video if there is enough interest in this thread.

and another thing, more than likely related, that little module up near the coil, well, it heats up, big time. To the point where i cant touch it. Is that why it has that heat sink grease stuff on it?

lets try to not let this thread die. Its been almost a year for this project, i gotta get it done.

Just a thought but maybe the timing is way too far advanced. That will make an engine hard to turn over.

thats one of the first things i looked at, before the CTS was changed. Timing looked ok, The distributor was about centered on the top hold down bolt.

guys, come on. Someone has to have a clue. No one is around to really help me, so this forum is my only shot. I dont want to get out of the festiva game, but if it keeps going like this, i will.

Does it smoke any out the exhaust when it refires? As if it were loading up with fuel?

no smoke or weird smells at all. Today i did get a code 8 from it, and a code 1. Code 8 is the Airflow sensor, however, the car ran ok a few days ago, although it had a pretty good bog to it. Noting got jiggled or anything, so i'd assume all the connections are fine. Now about code 1; Ignition Diagnostic Monitor, what is that? Is it like alot of other OBD 1 systems, where if the car isnt running you get some sort of base code (my 91 s10 was code 13)

Is there a way to test the VAF?

What does it do with the MAF unplugged? Sounds like its being flooded/advanced spark. Only two things that would keep the engine from turning over with the starter.

ive already solved the turning over problem.

The engine however does the same thing with the VAF hooked or un hooked. I just gotta know what kind of voltages i should be getting at the connector.

Sounds like the timing belt skipped a tooth. Have you checked the mechanical timing?

Here Are The Specs For A Ford Festiva VAF. The Aspire Is Showing A MAF Which Is Totally Different In Terms Of Testing. But Start With This And Let Me Know If You Need More OK? And OF COURSE I'm Still Around. I Just Work My Ass Off And I Never Keep In Touch With Anyone. I Work 65+ Hours A Week Man. It's Tough With A Family To Support Too.

thanks jeff. i was giving you any grief, ive been busy as well. Thats why i havent gotten a hold of you either. Plus im about to blow up this car....again.

reason i asked about the VAF specs is vause the car is pulling that code. The plug is in good shape as well.
