  • Anyone here change a starter on a 90 festiva before? If so...

..HELP!! I found that my starter is bad, thanks for all the replies to my other post guys.

How do you get the dawg gone starter outta the thing?!? I disconnected the main wire from the starter post, then took the clip wire off Took out the two main bolts that supposedly hold the thing in. I cannot get the starter out after all this. It looks like there might be a bracket on the back of the starter, or something like that. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Jim

You are correct there is a bracket there that attaches the starter to the transmission, you need to remove it and your problems will be solved!!!

Do you know how many bolts are on the bracket? I got the one I can see off but can't see the others. I think I felt two more. But one felt like the back of one? I just can't get to the one in the back. Any clues for me? Thanks, Jim

It's just two bracket bolts on top of the transmission, and the 2 horizontal ones. One you can see from top and the other, just get a 6"extention and it will go right onto the bolt. Make sure you unhook the starter wire before you arc all over the place and scare yourself.

Another tip would be to go to a dollar general store a buy a hand held mirror, that will help you see the bolts that are hiding, simple tip but works well, just not a pink one.

I use a purple one. the dollar store often also sells the magnet on a stick and the claw grippy ones too

The starters on 'autos' are a darn sight harder to get at from up top than those on 'manuals'. That silly plate at the back of the starter on a manual transmission looks like over-engineering; I've never seen attachment points like that on other cars. I'm of the opinion that the darn nuisance thing can be omitted altogether. Anyone out there tried that?

Yep, eliminated mine a long time ago. No problems have arisen.

When I have to address something I can't see I try and take a high resolution picture of it with my digital camera. It may require several tries but once you have it you can take it to your computer and fill the screen. Then you can study the picture at your leisure seeing things more clearly than in any other way short of removing the engine.
