Have a 89 festie that we put the motor in it from an 93 festie. the 89 is an automatic and the 93 was a 5spd. motor is still running good, but we have no power, starts and drives but will no pull and is slow to take off from a stop. is weak and has trouble getting up to speed.

92 GL was red automatic Ms Va., now Zinc Yellow

TPS maybe? Some other sensors as well may differ between the motors since the EFI on the '89 autos was somewhat different from the '90-'93. I'd start with the TPS though, just reuse the one from the old motor.
    No festiva for me ATM...

Did you just drop it in or did you replace some stuff like the timing belt and water pump? Do you have any experience with how it was running in the 93 or is it one of those deals where you were just told "it ran fine"? How long did the motor sit before it was swapped in?

My first guess would be to check the mechanical timing and make sure one of the sprockets isn't off a tooth or so. This will cause it to have to "wind up" instead of pulling good straight out of the hole.

drove the 93 home, 200 miles and was running great. motor has been timing reset and double checked, new timing belt and TPS. now check engine light is on and it runs rich loads up on gas, when check engine light goes out motor dies

Make sure you have all your sensor conectors connected. Its human nature to assume the worst. But a good trouble shooter will always take the path of least resistance first. I.E. you just did a swap.So look at what you disconected to fascilitate this work. Double/Triple check before you start thinking something major is wrong. Good Luck-

Have changed out TPS and rechecked all of the connections, they were tagged 1,2,3 and all connected. still idling high, heavy gas smell. wondering if it could be a Throttle body promblem. not sure motor was running good before the change now it sounds and acts like the old motor

The motor came from a manual transmission car, you need to adjust the idle up to ~800 RPM for the automatic transmission.

Ground out the black single wire connector near the brake booster and adjust the screw under the rubber cap on the throttle body.

I would agree with Zanzer. When the engine runs normally but has no power your timing is off. Probably much too much retarded. Is the rotor correctly placed on the distributor shaft?

Are you grounding the STI connector when setting idle speed and timing? Otherwise the computer could be working against you.
