  • Rear Axle Nut?

Shop wants to charge $175.00 for an axle nut that is apparently stripped (although it was fine when I checked a few days ago). They said they have to swap the while spindle because he can't find the nut. Does anyone know the size of the nut?

    Thanks!

To add to pyroom's post it is the one on the rear-right wheel and it is left handed thread. In particular I would like to know if I can take the nut off any festiva and throw it on my 89. First mechanic experience and already getting ripped off. Help!

How do you strip a nut that doesn't even get torqued?

some idiot decided to crank it on the wrong way for a minute straight then once he realized it wasn't turning he turned it the other way and it worked.

There are still some threads but not enough to pass a safety

i am sure someone on here can hook you up with a rear axle nut...
and yes, the right passenger side is Left hand thread, and left driver side is regular right hand thread.

post a WTB in the other section if you need one.

haha I know somebody will hook me up the only problem is I want it today!! I figure the mechanic already installed the parts without asking me which is why he is so butt hurt (just a guess) about me trying to find the part myself.

If I know the size then I'll be able to run to the wrecker and grab one, but my tire irons are in my car including the one for the spindle nut, which is at the mechanic lol.

I have experienced 2 types of Festiva rear spindle nuts. Both types have the same thread. And it's true the passenger side is reverse thread. Some bonehead apprentice put the air wrench on full throttle and stripped your nut. Earlier spindle nuts are staked (smack the rasied lip with a cold chisel to lock it in place) and later cars (all 93s in my experience) have an ordinary nut with a slotted cover for a through-spindle cotter pin. Wherever possible I have switched rear spindles over to the cotter pin arrangement which is simple enough to do by drilling an 1/8 (approx) small hole through the soft steel spindle. But you need those rare nuts and covers first.
Having switched to Aspire fixins on one car and stripped out another car I have complete spare Festiva rear brake stuff if you're wanting or badly in need. For all the conniption of removing drums etc and getting things packaged for Can Post I would just as soon send you an entire spindle with brakes, wheel cylinder, drum, backing plate etc etc rather than fish around for 1/2 hour trying to retrieve one lousy (in your case, valuable) nut.

my local Advance Auto Parts, Auto Zone and NAPA all carry the correct LH thread spindle nuts, in stock, for about $3-$7. Sounds like someone at that shop needs a time-out...

We don't have an advance auto parts up here

We called everywhere, the only place that had anything was Canadian tire and they said it was special order.

We found one off a '90 in a junkyard... hopefully it fits.

I have a feeling the 1989 Festiva isn't in the system or something because people said no as soon as I mentioned the year.

Does anyone know the socket size I need? I thought it was 29mm but that's the front.

Ajustable wrench will work as will one of the big Imperial sockets (can't remember which one). Get this through your head: You don't need to, or have to, reef these on! I pull them up tight to seat things and then back off until the wheel spins free.
