  • Hood open right now. What do I look for?

Continuing on from a thread i started a while ago.

My car snapped it's 3rd belt today, tensions were fine, i adjusted it after 100kms all that, but the slipping kept getting worse and worse until it snapped.

How do i know if its my water pump or alternator thats causing it?

What am i looking for as far as the pulleys go? both spin but i wouldn't say they spin freely.. some friction / resistance is there, but not a lot. Certainly isnt seized.

    HELP!

Oh also.. the car seems to run smoother / better once the belt has snapped - so running with no alternator & waterpump.

I think you should sell it to me for a 100 bucks
and i will figure out all your problems . lol
Sounds like a alternator problem take it off
and turn it by hand and see if the bearings turn
      freely and make no noise.

haha your offer is tempting at the moment :p

Just turn the pulley by hand you mean? I am doing that and it makes a small sound, just like a frictiony noise, like a rubbing almost.

Now imagine it trying to turn a few hundred times faster.

It probably locks up when it has tension on it....so when the belt is off the engine is not fighting it.
              Probably the alternator....

Check the condition of both pulleys. A burr could be tearing the belts?
