The sputter is probably a hole in the exhaust system. When the engine is running and with the wheels blocked, look under the car for signs of escaping exhaust. If you can, get someone to step on the gas to make any leaking fumes more visible. It shows up better on a cold day in the morning.

Is it just a noise or does the engine seem to sputter? if it's the engine sputtering it's the cap, rotor and wires. Any one or all of those will cause a sputter. Very common problem with these cars especially when it's wet out.

For the ingiton system wipe the wires and cap with a clean rag and see it that helps. If not you can pull the wires and crimp the ends a bit with a pair of pliers for a better contact with the spark plugs and cap. If that doesn't work pull the spark pugs, clean, and check the gap. If that works you've fixed the problem without spending any money. I clean the wires on my car once or twice a year when I do a tuneup.

I took out spark plugs and looked at them. 2 of them looked ok. But 2 of them had some kind of build up in the hole on the spark plug itself. Looks like a black cement caked in there. Hard as a rock. I'll see if that helps any.
