  • Tranny shudders in gear with clutch disengaged

Brand new Timken T/O bearing. Everything seems fairly smooth.Like when you start from a stop. Or take the car on a beat run. But when you are stopped, especially at a stop light. If you leave it in ANY gear. And keep the clutch disengaged. The idle drops down @ 200 rpm. And you start feeling a shuddering/vibration. I have no history on the tranny it was a craigslist
$100.00 gamble. I have a good tranny to put in the car. But I want to start learning these 5 spds. Could this be a bad pilot bearing. I'm kinda guessing I have a bad THRUST bearing in the Tranny case? Thanks,Thomas

Oh ya I forgot to add that when its cold & idling higher. You dont even notice it. Its just when its warmed up & low idle speed.

Yes thats exactly correct. Smooth & quiet @ idle. And @ highway speeds no vibration or noise. Sometimes it doesnt even do it when warmed up. But its pretty consistant when warmed up....

Did you buy the car with the trans or did you install the trans after you had the car?

Did you check the shaft for any sort of play before you installed it?

                          figured it out

Well after thinking about this all night long. I've concluded that my Pilot bearing is the culprit. Its the only bearing doing something under these conditions. I'm gonna pull my tranny b4 its chews up my input shaft. Hopefully I havent galled it up. But as someone suggested I've been throwing it in neutral @ the stop lights to make it stop. Arrrrgh ! I'm getting way to good @ pulling tranny's lately. Do I have to remove the clutch? Or can I just pull the bearing? Thanks-

pretty sure you are gonna have to pull the clutch. The pilot bearing is in the flywheel, right? So you kind of have to take the flywheel off to replace it ;P

Or don't keep your foot on the clutch at the light....

I thought you might be able to get the puller in there w/o having to R&R the clutch/press plate?
