Stick shift won't go in R or 5

Well, wasn't a nice morning this morning...

my Australian 1996 Festiva doesn't go in Reverse or in 5th gear ... I sent it to a mechanic this morning and he said he had to replace the whole gear box ...

I have a gut feeling it's the selector fork ... if it's .. can this be replaced on it's own .. or the whole gearbox needs to be replaced ?

i would suspect the shifter gate first, not the fork

To check the shifter gate, does it need to take the whole gearbox out ? coz the mechanic said he has to take out the whole thing ...

yeah, unfortunately, it has to come out to verify the internal issue. a new box should be able to be had feasily, but if you're in there, get a first gen box for better MPG.

Hi Guys ... I'm still stuck with this problem ..

The stick actually doesn't even move horizontaly towards R or 5
could it ever be the clutch ?! I rang someone and he told me it could be the clutch though it doesn't make sense to me, 'cause it shifts nicely into all other gears !!

Go buy a second hand festiva can pick them up in sydney for under $300.. and do the swap either by yourself or get the same mechanic to do it.. search eBay and Sydney.gumtree.com.au
