Degreasing engine made my check engine light came on

I sprayed degreaser on my engine and intended to let it sit a few mins until I rinsed it off. I mindlessly forgot to rinse it off and ran the car with the degreaser still unwashed from engine.

My parking brake light and check engine lights lit up and have been that way since.

I'm posting a few individual threads on some problems I'm having with my 88 FF. Just bought it and could use all the help possible. I don't have much money for a mechanic but I'm able to do the work myself as long as I have directions.

Take a quick poke around under the hood, make sure the degreaser didn't melt anything. Depending on the brand/type, degreaser can be hell on automotive paint and unprotected plastic/rubber. I would unplug some of the easy to get to electrical connectors and check for fluid. If you find any, give it a quick clean and re-connect everything back up.

Easiest way to find out where something went wrong would probably be to check the codes. Like jjk1224 said, look for any water covering electrical connectors. (Specifically your fusible links, take them out and make sure they're dry.)The parking brake light comes on if brake fluid is low, so give that a quick check as well.

What type of degreaser? There are degreasers.And then there are DEGREASERS that smell like oven cleaner & make you cough ( like PURPLE POWER ). If you used the later,you need to wash it off asap. Like someone stated above,it can be pretty caustic. But if you just used the foaming "GUNK" style. It really is pretty mild and wont melt plastic. But it will "swell" rubber bushing if left on long enough. So make sure you rinse it off as well asap.

And my brake fluid is at max level. Any other ideas on the parking break light still being lit on the cluster?

e-brake switch sticking... or lever not fully retracted.

Where is the switch and how could I make sure the lever is fully retracted? When I release it I definitely make sure it's all the way down.

I believe the switch is at the base of the E-Brake inside the car.

i d,get a can of contact cleaner,and pull apart any connectors,spray them ,clip back together,then surface spray to clean,any part,where u,sprayed degreaser. or get a cannister vac,and get all dust,and dirt,on anything,where u,sprayed deg. next time,u,clean engine,vacumn it first,then wipe it all down by hand,with paint cleaner. mdoyleufo@gmail.com
