  • Master Cylinder replacement

After doing the brakes on my car, I noticed that my master cylinder has a MAJOR leak running down my firewall. The question is, where do I find a good replacement? Autozone wants $84 for a new one with reservoir or 40$ for a re-man without res. Has anyone ever had any luck with ebay mastercylinders?
I was looking at http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Brake...#ht_1732wt_939 for 30$ it seems like a super deal, but I dont want one of the most important parts on my car to crap out. The only thing autozone has going for them right now is the lifetime warranty vs the 12 month on the ebay. Any suggestions appreciated!

Personally, I'd think about upgrading to the Escort master cylinder. It's a cheaper replacement than the Festiva one and you get better brakes. I'll be doing this when mine dies.

I got one at Advance Auto for $40 something with no reservoir. The reservoir was a pain to install; I thought I cracked it because it leaked after installation. I ended up pulling it out about halfway and it stopped leaking.

^^ That's due to an issue with the grommets. When you pulled it up you raised the barbs on the reservoir which caused the grommets to expand and seal tighter against the bore. Unfortunately you can't purchase new grommets but I've come up with a bushing "fix" that buys them some time.

They were the new grommets that came with it. They were tight as H.

Mine leaked with the new ones as well. Some do, some don't. I've had no issues with others I've installed. I guess some grommets are better than others. Here's a link to thread where I posted up pics of the fix.
