There's an idle speed compensator designed in. Anytime the alternator 'feels' a current draw, it opens the throttle a little bit. Mine idles about 1100 rpm. I don't think it's a problem.

If your idle rpm is higher than this, it may need to be adjusted. Do you have fuel injection? Most, but not all '89s, have EFI. Do you have a tachometer?

No....mine is carbed. Your on the right track I think. The idle up sensor is on the same bracket as the idle adjustment screw. Idle is set at about 1000rpm, no tach however. I think there may be a ground problem? Can't drive it. Just bought it..

the idle compensator is located on the driver side rear of the carb near the base. it's a horrizontal screw with a spring on it. back it off about 1/2 turn and test... continue untill there's only a 200 rpm increase when loaded. the base idle should be set at 650 (though if the engine is running well, you can get it down to 200rpm or so and still have it stable and responsive, FOR TESTING ONLY)
