catch in 5 th

1990 5 speed,
when i shift into 5 th I feel a little , how shall i say, catch ???
clutch doesnt slip per se but seems a little worn, maybe an adjustment issue,
just bought it a couple of weeks ago and i love it

May be a 5th gear synchronizer gettin a little worn. My car does it goin into 2nd. At higher rpms it'll stick sometimes and you gotta wait for the revs to match before it'll slide into gear.

Another thing that might help is to rev the engine as you shift, if synchos need.... encouragement.
Spinning the synchos has helped in some of my past cars. Consider your days of speed shifting..... over.

Because of the size and location on the shafts of the two 5th gears, they're more easily starved of lubrication when the fluid level is
allowed to drop too much. Consider changing and possibly upgrading that trans fluid.
I use Mobil 1 synthetic atf in mine.

ok, I tried all suggestion but none actually worked (as far as shifting technique goes) BUT I did find something that works and maybe its a further clue, before i go from 4th to 5 th I first go to neutral, let out the clutch, wait a second or two, and the depress clutch and go into 5 th, goes right into gear with no resistance, Opinions ???/

The syncro's tired, that technique is also know as double clutching...it's an old school, pre syncro era trick.

(Disclaimer I'm not an expert) With older big vehicles that don't have syncros, like my '52 bus, one must double clutch to get the tranny to go into the gears more easily. To me, sounds like that would mean the syncro is getting worn out. (BTW that's where my name comes from, double clutchin!)
Like I said though I'm no tranny guru.

If you really love your Festiva do the following:

1. Read carefully all of this thread.
2. Flush transmission with cheap ATF.
3. Fill with Penzoil Synchromesh Manual Transmission Fluid.
4. Marvel at the improvement.

If this doesn't bring results you can live with nothing short of a rebuild or another transmission will help.
