  • Possible Headlight Short?

I have been having electrical issues with my ‘89 festiva. When I turn on the headlights the battery starts to drain down. I think it is staying charged when the headlights are not on, but I'm not certain. The alternator has been checked and is working properly. Has anyone had this problem or any similar issues?

How did you check the alternator?

you are thinking the same thing i am, probably some kid at AZ on the machine. Festivas have fusible link issues between the battery and the alt, and they are old enough to have corroded grounds..also ford issued a TSB about this wiring.

replace those wire fusibles with the nice sealed ones. they pop right into place and ive never had an issue with them compared to the stock ones!

This is my Dads post, he is new to the whole "forum" thing. He took it to Advance I think to have the charging system checked. It is a strange issue with the electrical system. I’ve drove it the past few days. When you run the headlights the battery will not stay charged, the radio stops working on FM but not AM. The car starts to idle high, headlights get dim etc.. Driving it during the day with no headlights the car is fine. It is hard to trouble shoot, plus we are not the most electrically inclined. We fabricate that electrical stuff is voodoo to us.

ok, take a DVOM (multimeter) and check the battery voltage with the car running in nutral, and no lights/fans/radio on. should be above 13.6 (if it's not, check/repair alternator or wires). next, turn on EVERYTHING! (wipers, lights, blower motor, radio etc) voltage should be NO LOWER than 13.4 at the battery, if it is lower, replace the alternator or exciter wire (one of the 2 small wires at the alt).

Someone else could be having the same issue in the future and would like to know what you did.
