  • Have a few problems

I have a few problems....First i found out today when i put the car on a rack at work that the gas tank is leaking. It seems to be coming from the seam, it looks like its coming from where the tank bolts to the body of the car on the drivers side. Also the brake pedal goes pretty much all the way to the floor. I pulled the rear drums and checked them and everything in there looks good no leaks from wheel cylinders or anything. Im thinking maybe its an issue with the master cylinder...is this problem common on these cars? I just know if i go to replace the master cylinder i will be replacing every hard brake line on the car most likely due to them being so rusted. Any ideas?

Fill the m/c reservoir and bleed the brakes. See if you can see where it's coming from. Also, under the driver's side interior plastic there is a metal cover that exposes the filler hose. Check that before you pull the tank.

Safety Guy is in your area he has replaced tanks and hard lines IIRC so maybe able to provide advice and on site supervision.

If MC is original likely the internal seal has failed after so many years and miles.
Might be best to replace the line first or at the same time, I have burst a hardline most unpleasant.

Ok thanks george, ive tried bleeding the brakes twice and the pedal is the same. Is the filler hose a common leak point on these? That would be a hell of alot better then the tank due to the fact junkyards punch holes in tanks so i would have to buy a new one if it is the tank.

No it is not, leakage at the seam is the more common failure.
Again, Safety Guy has ordered and installed a new tank.

Is there a cheap place to get a tank? I seen on rockauto they are about $150.

IIRC, $150 is not a bad price for a new tank.

Others will chim in I'm sure!

Ebay has new ones for $135 shipped item # 230655965152 . Its always a good idea to save ford festiva into your saved searches on ebay.

Also aside from the m c having a possibility of failing I would check the vacuum holding capability of the booster as well. My Cadillac one failed on me a year ago I had pressure with no vacuum to it and a spongey pedal with vacuum.
