I cannot get the axles to pop out of the trans. Every time I have worked on a FWD car before they pop right out with a little persuasion from a pry bar. These however are resiting all attempts. Is there a trick?

Axels
Sometimes it helps to have two people or 2 prybars and one pry from the top and one from the bottom, Usually I just stick a prybar in an give it a really sharp kick an they pop right out, but there are some more stubborn ones.1996 Aspire, 2DR 5SPD 185 60 14, Aluminum rims, Mild Stereo system, some neon tubes, 185 000 km not a speck of rust runs like a champ

I use a large screwdriver. I don't pry with it, I use it as a wedge. Stick it in between the axle and tranny and just a few taps with a hammer and they pop out.

Someone claimed that aftermarket CV axles had oversized circlips which made installation or taking them back out a big PITA. I've had no problems with my replacement axles so far (left one on my '89 and the right one on my '93).

The two I took out yesterday popped out and back in easily. Have to be careful prying near the transaxle , as it is possible to damage seals. I assume you had the opposite end of the shaft out of the steering knuckle first?sigpic

P.S.
If you remove both sides at once I would recommend sticking something the same diameter into the transaxle to keep side gears in position. I used some dowel rod about the size of a broom handle. Dont let the haftshafts hang from the transaxle unsupported either.sigpic
