My festy has heat when it switch the air flow to defrost, but when I switch the air flow to any other, vent, floor, vent and floor, it only blows what seems to be the outside air, which is cold now since its january and I live in TN. So the question is... why do i only have heat when I have it on defrost?

Our cars were made to only have heat out the defrost holes and on the floor, everything else pulls outside air or a/c. I'd say your floor "tubes" are disconnected or something if your not getting heat on the floor.1992 white L, Bp, American racing 13's, stock trans.

The way the 'plumbing' works in the heater box is that it passes through the evaporator (if you have A/C) then through a valve that directs it to the vents if selected. Then the air goes through the heater core and then to another valve that directs it to floor or defrost depending on the setting.
Simply put the valve that diverts the air to the vents grabs the air BEFORE it gets to the heater core, which is why there is never any hot air out of the vents.
I'm sure it was a cost savings decision to design it this way.
I remember seeing a diagram once of how this works and it made sense but I can't seem to find that diagram anywhere!
