Hi all. A while back my 92 Festiva starting making a whining/screeching sound when I had it in fourth gear. At first, I could avoid the sound by adjusting the angle of the shifter or avoiding fourth altogether. Fairly quickly, however, the noise continued while in other gears and eventually in neutral as well. It also got INCREDIBLY loud. I showed it to a friend who knows far more about cars than I do, and he said it could be the throwout bearing (which he actually helped me replace pretty soon before the noise started). While he was replacing that, he also checked the clutch out and it was fine, he said there were probably a good 60k miles left on it.
Does the throwout bearing sound like a likely candidate? Or does it sound like the transmission is toast? Or could it be something else? I'd really appreciate some help diagnosing it before I pull the engine out. Thanks!
