  • speedometer gear housing

Anybody know where one can find a speedometer gear housing for a 93 festy L. the tab is broke on the one that I own. Have not been able to locate on at the local junkyards yet. Really don't want to drive it until I have a fix of some sort on the gear housing. Thanks for any input.

I drove with a broken tab for years. The plate does very little more than hold the gear in place and a wire/wedge or some such to ensure the gear doesn't pop loose is adequate. You can always try to make another plate. It is separate from the gear assembly.

JB Weld worked on my previous Festy. Like Bert said, the tab is of little importance. The assembly fits so snugly without it, I wouldn't worry too much.

I used a washer under the bolt after my tab broke. You can grind a concave arc in the washer to make it good as original.

georgeb's advice about modifying a washer is sound. I discovered awhile ago that using a ratchet and long extension with 10 mm socket from up above is easier to get the sending unit bolt out than fussing around underneath with a wrench.

About a foot and a half worth of extensions stuck through some wiring harness is what I do. The car has to be level to check/fill so I don't jack or use ramps.
