What's the part that is connected to the air filter. It's like a box looking thing, what's it do? Also the little round thingy that's connected to the box. And what's it do?

I'll try and get pic tomorrow. It connected to the front of the air flow. Towards the front of the cat and has a hose connected to it.
How do you know If the air flow meter is dirty or bad (not working)
can it be cleaned and how?

the rear hose should pass air freely. it feeds o2 to the rear half of the cat. the front hose should also flow freely. it allows the exhaust pulses to actuate on a diaphram in the box and pulse o2 into the other tube. i'll have to look up how to test the PAIR unit, but i want to say that it's not something you should worry about at the moment.
what is the engine doing that is making you suspect the intake/PAIR system?

Just trying to learn what different parts are and do.
I know the round thingy that is on the front of it, is all clogged up with gunk. Don't know what it is though. Look like it should open and close.

OOOHH!! that's your warm air valve. that uses heated air off the exhaust manifold to pre-heat the intake air so that you don't ice the carb in cold weather. there should be a vac line attached to it and the valve should move freely with your finger. if there's something blocking it, remove it now.

ok, as air passes through the carb, there's a pressure drop. ALSO there's a temp drop BECAUSE of the pressure drop. the temp drop can be low enough to have ice condense onto and IN the carb at the venturi which can cause the fuel to stop flowing and the car will stall.
the "vac" line feeds to a thermostatic valve under the filter housing.
