  • rough idles, stalling on left turns, no power at low rpms

    1989 4-speed festiva with carb.

New owner and I must say that this thing is pretty fun. Runs great at high RPMS, but has no power or "dead spots" at low rpms after gear shifts. Will lose power in fourth going up hills unless I am going over 55 and even then it's close. Runs well on flat ground unless I floor it. Stalls on left hand turns only!

Will not idle at low rpms, idle set probably around 1000-1200 or so to keep it running. Has a "miss" but I can't hear any real consistent timing to it.

Changed: cap, rotor, wires, (not plugs they looked good).

    Choke operating normally.

Played with every idle adjusting mechanism on the carb to no avail.

No obvious vaccuum leaks (disconnected hoses)

I suspect that this may be a carb problem (have gumout additive in the gas and cleaned the carb with some carb cleaner with minimal improvement so far).

    I appreciate any ideas/input

I am not a Festiva carb expert ,but if it stalls when you turn ,and has all those other probs ,it for sure sounds like a carb problem internally, I would guess additive is not going to cure it , maybe a float problem ,not enough gas in the bowl, you will prolly need to go thru it .

      Thanks for the input.

I advanced the timing and that cured the dead power spots. I have lowered the idle, but it still stalls if I brake hard or turn left with any speed.
