Okay, started on the Festy. Broke a 3/8 extension on the lug nuts. Apparently an impact wrench will be required. These things aren't reverse thread, are they?

lol, no, not reversed. I have antiseize on almost every lug nut/bolt I own lol.. some people say that's not a good thing, but I don't care.

@ festyboy, I think tinypic.com lets you upload videos without an account?

Right now, it would be a great thing. I have never seen lugs this tight. And it has to be where someone over torqued them, because the tires are practically brand new. There is no lug wrench with the car, so I guess I will hammer a boxed end to death, and see what moves. The only breaker bar I have is 1/2 in. drive, too big for the socket that fits the lugs.

Okay, 1/2 in. drive , 14 mm socket and breaker bar FINALLY got the lug nuts broke. After that, other than destroying the boot on the tie rod with the separator, pulling the axle was no big deal. Now I guess the fun begins.

If you have the knuckle out, half your problems are over.

Artie, I have 2 old knuckles, came of off Little blue car a couple years ago, may even be missing the spacers. How about you and I hunt up the spacer set, and make a video at FM6, extremely detailed, with pics and scans from the manual, on how to do the job? We can go about it a few different ways, like I did in my prior thread, so that people without a press, or the Rotunda kit, can still do it....

Spacers can be made. The thing that varies on the Festy knuckles is the machining between the two bearings. Take it apart, clean everything well and if the spacer is missing turn one on the lathe to the same thickness as the separator between the bearings.

^ umm not quite, there's a preload that needs to be there and that spacer is there to keep things from getting too tight. if you were to machine a new spacer to match the step in the knuckle and then torque everything down, you'll ruin the bearings almost instantly.

Well since I have over 10k miles on a home-made spacer. I can assure you that you will not ruin bearings instantly......

how did you measure the spacer and did you MATCH that measurement or did you add .001-.002" to allow for crush once you torqued down the axle nut?

Micrometer......having a lathe and a mill, make making parts simple. And yes, it is a hair over the measurement.......how do you think Mazda made the spacers? They measured and made the part.

Yah the whole reason for the different size spacers is because the factory bit wore out, so one knuckle comes out .xXx the next one would come out .xXx - .00X due to wear on the bit they used to machine the knuckles.. right?
