  • 323 to Festiva alt wiring help?

I am about to buy an alt for the Festy and wanting upgrade the alt.
I have sitting at O'reilly's right now, for pick up ...both a festy alt(50 amp)...and a 323 alt (60 amp)
Thinking about wiring a 323 alt onto my festy is giving me the EBGB's!
I dont want to fry anything by hooking it up the wrong way.
Did some reasearch, and I think I have the wire color coding from internet source.
Can anybody verify if what I have for the 323 alt on a 1988 Festy is correct?

    Here's what I found:

    323 w/red stripe wire = 88 festy blk/red stripe wire
323 blk wire = 88 festy white wire
    323 w/red stripe wire = 88 festy blk/w stripe wire

Not having any luck finding a 323 plug to wire onto the festy alt wires either.
Is there another way to do this swap?
    Thanks!!!!
    Dan

It should hook up without any wiring

My KL alternator plugged right into the stock Festiva wiring and works just fine

If no one from the future stops you from doing it, how bad of a decision can it really be?

Dan has a carby Damkid, but hopefully FestyBoy will chime in. I know he figured this out on Batstiva's car at FM4 to get him home. Not to mention I have been thinking of doing the same and would like a refresher course.

        Not ...plug and play!
Went to parts store, took pics.
Waiting on pics of both alt's to load, and I have wiring diagrams for both too
post them up in a few.....

Does seem like the 88-89 carby's were a creature of their own

          Pics!

          Festiva alt, top view

          Festiva alt side view

          323 alt, top view

323 alt, side view ...and the problem area, this plug is different

I think I got most of it
The long black on the 323 should be the same as the shorter screw type plug on the festy, the small plug that is same on both alt's is for the choke, and the third plugs, which are entirely different, are to the fuses, marked "S" + "L" on the 323
          and "R" + "L" on the festy

          Is this correct?

          From 1st post:

          323 w/red stripe wire = 88 festy blk/red stripe wire ("L" to "L")
323 blk wire = 88 festy white wire
          323 w/red stripe wire = 88 festy blk/w stripe wire ("R" to "S")

^ Bump. It fell off the new posts. Waiting to get an answer.
I was thinking, for anybody that can answer, can I just use spade connectors on the festy wires to hook onto the blade connectors inside the plug on the 323 alt?
            Thanks

I would go to the junk yard and get the 323/egt/ 90-93 festiva plug for the alternator, then solder the wires correctly. No point in doing something incorrectly

Do you know about about the swap I am trying to do?
In the thread I listed, what I think is the correct wiring, to swap to the 323 alt. I'm trying to verify if I have it right. Do you know if what I listed is, indeed correct?

                From 1st post:

                323 w/red stripe wire = 88 festy blk/red stripe wire ("L" to "L")
323 blk wire = 88 festy white wire
                323 w/red stripe wire = 88 festy blk/w stripe wire ("S" to "R")

No where in this post is a guess at the 323 year, model or the part number of the mazda Alt.

For AZ i used part number 14857 because it was 60 amp.

This web site has test leads that can be bought and the connectors
robbed for an Alt. It also gives alternator part numbers with the same
plug in which helps for swaps

                        Duh...on my part. 1988 Mazda 323 alt.
Thanks, and I had the festy alt checked at a part store, fell to 37 amps under load, pretty much what my multimeter was checking when I used it.
From what I have learned, there really is no other alt that is plug and play on a 1988 carbed Festiva. except a 1988 Festiva alt.
A mod to the plug is needed, and when done, several alts would then be plug and play on the modded plug.
Really good info you gave. Kudos to you!
That confirms the wiring I had worked out. Thank you , and I am sure a few other members will benefit from it also.

That connector looks awfully similar to the Aspire alty connector. I just went and snapped a photo.

I got a plug end from the junk yard and I've been rock solid for several months now.

                            Invader, awesome pic!
What i'm getting is, is that most of the efi share a lot of connectors, unlike the carbed festy's. Switching to the efi style alt connector gives the option of using several different alt's, and they are then plug and play.
I called 2 jy's, no 323's in yard, went anyway, figured I would find a connector from something. Can you believe I couldnt find one!
No festy or 323 anywhere, and any other candidates were stripped of its harness parts.
To heck with it, I got the festy alt, and am about to head out to install it.
Will do the upgrade later, as I plan an engine swap, and will upgrade then.

                            Thanks evr'body!!!!!!!
