Went to go pick a friend up from the airport, and made it about 2 miles before I overheated.

Got the car home about an hours ago, getting ready to diagnose. Ride to the parts store lined up. AZ has all possible parts in stock.

Overheating, not low on coolant, heater still blows warm, top hose hot, bottom and radiator cool as a cucumber.

About to pull the thermostat and run her, see if I have movement that way...

Could just be a sticking T-stat. Did it overheat on the way home?

never heard of such an over heating ,without an over heated radiator? temp sender? fan not working? a head can over heat, without it blowing a gasket.
but the radiator would be hot. thermostat? good luck.

The temp gauge was reading uncomfortably close to the H after 2 miles. I didn't let it actually overheat. Been there, done that, replaced the warped head, and gasket. Not doing that again...

So, went to AZ, got the water pump, thermostat, and timing belt. Came home, had pulled the thermostat before I left, and put the outlet back on.

Start the car, and look in the radiator. Fluid movement! Yay! Just a sticky thermostat, right?

            Dunno.

I left the car running. I put the new O2 sensor into my friends car, repayment for the ride, and kept an eye on mine. Temp started moving up, and the heater started blowing warm! So I let her run for about 40 minutes. Gauge got about 3/4 of the way up towards H and the heater blew hot. Still had fluid movement.

So, I am thinking that the head gasket might be leaking a bit of exhaust gas into the coolant.

On to weighing my options, and counting my cash. This will affect some plans...Dagnabbit.

Took it for a drive. As soon as I started going, the temp dropped down. Not to "C" as I would expect, but close. The heater was only warmish. Hit 70 for about 4 miles, same thing.

Head gasket or the water pump is just starting to give? Nothing from the weep hole, no play at the pulley. I need to do a leak down or compression test...

I say gauge....if it was warm while sitting it gets WARM...start moving cools back down...with no thermostat that will happen every time. I doubt the gasket it blown.

An infrared temperature reader could come in handy here.

I dunno. I have another cluster I can swap in. In my experience, with no therm, and moving, it will slam to the C. I have nursed a couple hundred extra miles out of a leaking gasket by removing the thermostat and adding barsleaks.

Now, I DO want to try putting the new thermostat in, and see how she behaves, but it started raining on me...

Could. I will narrow down the possible causes. My approach tends to be painstaking, but thorough. I can't afford to guess at things, I make double sure of my diagnosis before using parts. But using the new thermostat is part of the diagnosis, for $8, I can eat it

I wondered where that post went!!! I have no idea...

You have coolant flowing nicely at times and not at times ??

That can only happen with an air pocket in the coolant or a sticky
thermostat. I did find a loose impeller one time but that is too rare
                            to consider here.

Without the thermostat, I have perfect coolant flow. With the old one, the bottom hose and radiator were cool as a cucumber.

My concern now is that without the thermostat, at highway speeds in 50 degree air, I am running at almost normal operating temperature, blowing warm air out of the heater. It should have been slap cold.

It started raining on me last night, heading out to put a new thermostat in it now. If it overheats....
